Thought to have originated in Iran, the pomegranate is now grown in many parts of the world, including parts of California and Arizona in the United States. Inside a tough, red skin the pomegranate has hundreds of edible seeds surrounded by a translucent red pulp with a brilliant sweet-tart flavor. Pomegranates have become more popular in recent years, often used as an ingredient in juices, smoothies and alcoholic beverages. They are also eaten plain or used in cooked dishes.
Rich in potassium, pomegranates also are a good source of vitamin C. These essential nutrients offer health benefits that may include reduced risk of heart disease, hypertension, cancer, and other degenerative diseases. To provide additional nutritional benefits, pomegranate juice can be added to processed foods, beverages, desserts, and other food products.
