Thought to be native to Mexico or Central America, this tropical fruit is round or pear shaped, with green skin and white or pink flesh. Its sweet flavor makes it a popular fruit for eating fresh or in jams, jellies, desserts and smoothies. It is usually only available fresh in the areas in which it is grown.
Guava is extremely rich in vitamin C—it has four times that of an orange. Also a good source of fiber and vitamin A, this sweet, fragrant fruit provides the benefits of antioxidants, which include a reduced risk of heart disease, hypertension, cancer, and other degenerative diseases. To provide additional nutritional benefits, guava puree can be added to processed foods, beverages, desserts, and other food products.
