Limes grow in tropical and subtropical climates such as Mexico, California, Florida, and the Caribbean. They are typically less sour than lemons, but still offer a somewhat tart flavor that is often used in drinks, fish dishes, and of course key lime pie.
An excellent source of vitamin C, limes were fed to British sailors during the 19th century to help prevent scurvy, leading to the nickname “limey.” Vitamin C is also a powerful antioxidant that offers health benefits including promoting a healthy immune system and reducing the risk of heart disease, hypertension, cancer, and other degenerative diseases. Lime juice can be added to processed foods, beverages, desserts, and other food products.
